Q: What is orthodontics?
A: Orthodontics is the process of moving the teeth and jaws into proper alignment with each other so that the teeth look as good and fit together as well as is possible for each person. This is usually done with appliances called braces.
Q: Who should wear braces?
A: Braces are worn by both children and adults, not only to improve the attractiveness of their smile but also because braces correct improper alignment of teeth that can lead to gum disease and early tooth loss.
Q: When should I visit the Orthodontist?
A: Some orthodontic conditions, such as crossbites, need to be corrected as early as 6 years of age. Ordinarily however, the ideal time for a child to be first seen by an orthodontist is after their four upper and lower permanent front teeth have come in; this is usually around 7 to 8 years of age. Adults can visit the orthodontist at any age to improve the appearance of their smile, as well as their overall dental health. It is never too late to have a beautiful healthy smile!
Q: How long will my orthodontic treatment last?
Treatment time depends on your individual needs. Your cooperation in keeping appointments, wearing rubber bands, maintaining good oral hygiene and not breaking the braces could allow us to finish early, but usually orthodontic treatment takes about two to two and one half years. To keep your teeth straight after the braces are removed, an additional two years of wearing removable retainers is usually necessary.
